Vehicle Examination in Mauritius: Certificate of Fitness

Vehicle Examination in Mauritius: Certificate of Fitness
Ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy is not just a legal requirement in Mauritius—it’s a responsibility toward road safety and environmental protection.

The National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) mandates regular vehicle examinations to make sure all vehicles on the road meet minimum mechanical and safety standards. This process is especially important for vehicles over 20 years old, which are subject to more frequent checks due to age-related wear and risk.

In this guide, we explain everything you need to know about the vehicle examination process, how to obtain your Certificate of Fitness, applicable fees, and where to get your vehicle examined in 2025.

What Is a Certificate of Fitness?

A Certificate of Fitness is an official document issued by an authorized examination centre after your vehicle passes inspection. It certifies that the vehicle is safe and mechanically sound. This certificate is required for the renewal of your Motor Vehicle Licence (road tax).
You must keep this certificate up to date at all times—driving without a valid Certificate of Fitness is illegal and may void your insurance in case of an accident.

How Often Do You Need a Certificate of Fitness?

The validity of the Certificate of Fitness depends on the type and age of your vehicle:

Vehicle Type Vehicle Age Validity Period
Private cars & motorcycles 0–11 years 24 months
12–20 years 12 months
Over 20 years 6 months
Taxis and contract buses 0–4 years 18 months

Note: Private cars and motorcycles are exempt from examination for the first 7 years from their original registration date (whether locally or abroad).
